Hive now has I/O and Memory stats and automated actions against abusers

July 28, 2011

The new version of 1H Hive has two main improvements: more usage statistics and additional options for automating your reaction to resource abuse.

I/O and Memory Statistics

In addition to the standard CPU usage of the accounts Hive now collects and displays information about I/O and memory usage. Again, as for the CPU, you can monitor the overall usage on your servers and see how this usage is divided among the separate accounts on the server. Thus you always have a good notion about the overall I/O and memory usage on your machines and know when a change in the system configuration may be needed. It also helps you spot easily not only CPU abusers, but also accounts that consume more memory or I/O than the other users on the machine.

Configurable Automatic Actions for Resource Abuse

The core functionality behind the new Automatic Actions tool in HIVE is to allow only a certain amount of server CPU to be used by one user for a given period of time. If this amount is reached Hive can automatically apply various customizable limitations to the users. The tool not only allows hosting providers to deal with one of the major problems of resource abuse but also to automate abuse processes by automatically suspending/notifying or limiting users.
